1(i)Exercise I — Objective Type Questions

Evaporating dish is made of:

Show SolutionHide Solution↓

porcelain

Reason — Evaporating dish is a bowl-shaped container made of porcelain. It is used for evaporating solutions or liquids.
Glass can break under high heat and is not commonly used for evaporating dishes. Metals may react with chemicals, so they are not preferred. Plastic cannot withstand high temperatures.

1(ii)Exercise I — Objective Type Questions

Spirit lamp is made of:

Show SolutionHide Solution↓

all of the above

Reason — Spirit lamp is a type of burner made of glass, brass or steel containing a wick. Spirit is used as fuel. It is used to heat up substances. Glass is used for spirit lamps in laboratories because it is transparent and heat-resistant. Brass is used to make durable spirit lamps. Steel is used for stronger, long-lasting spirit lamps.

1(iii)Exercise I — Objective Type Questions

The apparatus used to measure an accurate volume of a liquid is:

Show SolutionHide Solution↓

measuring cylinder

Reason — A measuring cylinder is a cylindrical glass apparatus graded in millilitres, decilitres and centilitres. It is used to measure the volume of liquid substances.
Beaker is used for mixing and heating, but gives only rough volume measurements. Conical flask is used for mixing solutions, not for accurate measurement. Test tube is used for small experiments, not for measuring volume.

1(iv)Exercise I — Objective Type Questions

To pass a gas from one vessel to another, you will use a:

Show SolutionHide Solution↓

delivery tube

Reason — A delivery tube is made up of glass and is used to transfer fluids or gases from one vessel to another.
Gas jar is used to collect gases, not to transfer them. Glass rod is used for stirring, not for gas transfer. Test tube is used to hold substances, not for transferring gas.

1(v)Exercise I — Objective Type Questions

To prevent the escape of a gas from a gas jar, you will cover its mouth with a:

Show SolutionHide Solution↓

watch glass

Reason — A watch glass is made up of glass. It is used to cover beakers or gas jars, as it prevents gas from escaping. It is also used like an evaporating dish for very small amounts of liquid.
Crucible is used for heating substances at high temperatures. Beaker is used for holding liquids, not for covering gas jars. Round-bottom flask is used for heating and reactions, not for covering.

1Exercise I — Long Answer Type Questions

Answer the following questions in brief:

(a) Why is chemistry known as an experimental science?

(b) Why are most of the apparatus made of glass?

Show SolutionHide Solution↓

(a) Chemistry is the branch of science which is mostly based on experiments and observations. An experiment performed under controlled conditions is an activity where we observe a natural or an artificially created phenomenon. Hence, chemistry is known as an experimental science.

(b) Most laboratory apparatus are made of glass due to the following reasons:

  1. Glass is a transparent material and we can see through it clearly.
  2. Glass can withstand high temperatures.
  3. Glass is easy to clean.
  4. Glass does not react with most of the chemicals used in experiments.
  5. Pyrex glass or borosil glass is a special type of glass which hardly expands on heating. Such glasses do not break even at high temperatures.
2Exercise I — Long Answer Type Questions

List any five precautions to be taken while performing an experiment in a chemistry laboratory.

Show SolutionHide Solution↓
  1. We should not work alone in the laboratory.
  2. We should always wear a lab coat in the laboratory. It protects our clothes.
  3. We must follow our teacher's instructions whenever we perform an experiment.
  4. We should not touch or taste any unknown substance or inhale any unknown gas directly.
  5. After the experiment is completed, we should properly wash, clean, dry the apparatus and put them back in their respective places in the laboratory.
