Two features that distinguish a robot from an ordinary machine are:
- A robot uses sensors to take input from its environment and its controller processes this input to take decisions, whereas an ordinary machine only performs a fixed task and cannot take decisions.
- A robot is programmable and can be reprogrammed to perform different tasks, whereas an ordinary machine performs a single, simple task that cannot be reprogrammed.
